Frequently Asked Questions

What should happen when a Brownie joins?
The Brownie should receive a Becoming a Brownie activity book. She should also be introduced to her Brownie Buddy who will look after her during her first few weeks at Brownies.
Her parents/guardians should complete a Starting Brownies form and should receive a copy of the Guiding essentials: Parents’ catalogue from Trading Service, so they can choose from the range of Brownie clothes. The Leader should give them any other information and advice they request.
Who should be a Brownie Buddy?
A Brownie Buddy is chosen by the Leaders, and this is an ideal role for an experienced Brownie who isn’t a Sixer or Second.
When does a Brownie make her Promise?
When she is ready she makes her Promise at her Promise Celebration, which is usually held four to six weeks after she joins.
How do Brownies make decisions?
Making decisions is one of the Five Essentials. Brownies make decisions through frequent Pow-wows. These are opportunities for every member of the unit to discuss and agree plans and for Leaders to incorporate Brownies’ ideas and opinions. Pow-wows can include voting as a way of making a group decision.
Brownies can make individual decisions in the activities they do, eg ‘How shall I decorate the card I am making?’ or ‘Which interest badge shall I do?’
My Brownie is nine and a half. What happens now?
As a Brownie nears her tenth birthday, it is important that she is encouraged to move to Guides whenever she is ready. She can work towards Go For It! Guides and once that is completed, she will receive a GFI card and a leaving celebration.
